PLEASE NOTE:

I have left this tutorial online as it seems to be quite popular, however,
I have compiled much more elaborate online tutorials for beginners,
intermediate and advanced in animated, step by step, detailed instructions
which will soon be available at www.drawinginpencil.com

Drawing a Cat
(These pencil tutorials have been designed for children in mind.
The steps are easy to follow and don't go into a lot of detail so
that children can follow along.)

When selecting a photo to draw from you have to make sure the photograph is very clear so that you can see the features, especially the eyes.

Before we move onto the first steps of drawing lets go over our pencil supply list:

You will need:
• 2B Pencil
• Tortillion
• Kneaded Eraser
• Clickable Eraser (Tuff Stuff is good)
• Acid-Free Drawing Art Paper
• White Vinyl Eraser (good for erasing large areas or mistakes).

Click on the cat photo above and print it out so that you can see it better.

1.  With your 2B pencil outline the outside shape of the cat lightly. You don't want to press too hard because it can indent your paper and this will make it hard to erase or shade over.

2.  Outline the eyes along with the pupils and place a light circle where the highlights will go. Click on the cat's eyes for a close-up.

3.  Shape the nose and mouth.

4.  Now let's shade in both of the ears at a medium shade (grey).

5.  Darken around the eyes and the pupils (dark black). You may want to shade them in lightly at first to see if the pupils are the same before darkening them. Next, shade in the eye colour (grey) and blend with tortillion. Click on the cat's eyes for a close-up.

6.  Next, darken in the nostrils (black) and shade in the nose to a grey shade. Blend with tortillion.

7.  We want to start adding some shape to the cat's head now. Shade (grey) along the sides of cat's nose, bottom of the mouth and along the bottom of the cat's head. Also, shade in the ears with adding a little more shading to the sides of the ears and down the sides. Blend with a tortillion.
